How to estimate gutter cost

A gutter replacement estimate or new install comes down to four steps:

  1. Measure the eaves. Add up the length of every roof edge where water runs off. That is your gutter length in linear feet.
  2. Choose a material. The cost per foot for gutters depends mostly on material: vinyl, aluminum, seamless aluminum, steel or copper.
  3. Count downspouts. Plan on one downspout for every 40 ft of gutter, and at least one per run.
  4. Add extras. Two-story work, removing old gutters and gutter guards all add to the total.
downspouts   = length ÷ 40  (round up)
gutters      = length × (material rate + two-story extra)
downspouts $ = downspouts × price each
removal = flat fee if replacing old gutters
guards = length × guard rate (optional)
total        = gutters + downspouts $ + removal + guards
cost per ft = total ÷ length

Worked example: 150 ft of aluminum gutters

150 ft of aluminum sectional gutters at $15/ft = $2,250, plus 4 downspouts at $50 = $200, total about $2,450.

Gutter replacement cost

Replacing gutters costs the same as a new install, plus $50–$200 to remove and dispose of the old gutters (HomeGuide). Turn on “Remove old gutters” in the gutter replacement cost calculator above to include it.

Angi reports a national average of $1,182 for gutter projects, with most homeowners paying $629–$1,736. Many of those are partial or smaller jobs, so a full replacement on a whole house usually costs more.

Seamless vs sectional gutters

Seamless gutters are made on site in one piece for each run, so there are fewer joints and fewer leaks. Seamless gutters cost about $3–$5 more per foot than sectional (HomeGuide). Sectional gutters come in pre-cut pieces that snap together; they are cheaper and DIY-friendly.
