Roofers price and order shingles by the square, but stores sell them by the bundle. Knowing how many bundles are in a square of shingles, how many shingles are in a bundle and how many square feet a bundle covers lets you turn a roof measurement into a shopping list and check a contractor’s material count.
How many shingles are in a bundle?
The number of shingles in a bundle depends on the product. GAF Marquis WeatherMax 3-tab shingles come 26 pieces per bundle and GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles come 21 pieces per bundle (Home Depot listings). Both cover about 33.3 sq ft per bundle, so plan by coverage rather than piece count.
The number of pieces in a bundle depends on the product, so the best answer comes from the manufacturer’s listing. Here are three examples from one brand:
| Shingle (example) | Type | Pieces per bundle | Coverage per bundle | Bundles per square |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GAF Marquis WeatherMax | 3-tab | 26 | 33.3 sq ft | 3 |
| GAF Timberline HDZ | Architectural | 21 | 33.33 sq ft | 3 |
| GAF Woodland | Specialty (heavy) | — | — | 4 |
Owens Corning Duration bundles are listed at 32.8 sq ft each (Home Depot Canada), so coverage can differ slightly by brand.
3-tab bundles usually hold more, thinner pieces; architectural (laminated) shingles are thicker, so a bundle holds fewer pieces but still covers about the same area. GAF lists Timberline HDZ at 64 shingles per square and Woodland at 56 shingles per square across 4 bundles. Always check the coverage printed on the bundle.
That is why counting individual shingles is rarely useful when you order. Two products can have a different number of pieces per bundle and still cover the same roof area. Plan by coverage and bundles per square, not by piece count.
How many square feet does a bundle of shingles cover?
A bundle of shingles covers about 33.3 sq ft for a 3-bundle-per-square shingle (100 ÷ 3), or 25 sq ft for a 4-bundle shingle (100 ÷ 4). A roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof, so divide 100 by the bundles per square printed on the wrapper to get the coverage of one bundle.
| Bundles per square | Sq ft per bundle |
|---|---|
| 3 | 33.3 |
| 4 | 25 |
| 5 | 20 |
If the label on your bundle shows a different coverage figure, use the label. Divide 100 by the bundles per square printed on the wrapper and you get the square feet each bundle covers.
How to figure how many bundles you need
GAF recommends working it out roof plane by roof plane:
- Measure the length and width of each roof plane, including dormers.
- Multiply length × width for each plane and add them together.
- Divide by 100 to get squares.
- Multiply squares × bundles per square.
- Add 10–15% for cutting and waste (GAF). Steep roofs, valleys and dormers need more.
Worked example
A gable roof with two planes of 40 × 30 ft = 2,400 sq ft = 24 squares = 72 bundles. With 10% extra, about 80 bundles (GAF).
The math: 24 squares × 3 bundles = 72 bundles. Adding 10% gives 72 × 1.10 = 79.2, and you can’t buy part of a bundle, so round up to 80.
Bundles needed by roof size
For a shingle sold 3 bundles per square, with 10% extra rounded up:
| Roof area | Squares | Bundles (no extra) | Bundles (+10%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | 10 | 30 | 33 |
| 1,500 sq ft | 15 | 45 | 50 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 20 | 60 | 66 |
| 2,500 sq ft | 25 | 75 | 83 |
| 3,000 sq ft | 30 | 90 | 99 |
Roof area is not the same as your home's floor area. A sloped roof is larger than the footprint, so measure the roof itself.
For a 4- or 5-bundle shingle, multiply the squares by that number instead, then add your waste allowance the same way.
How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?
Bundle weight depends on the product. GAF Timberline HDZ bundles are listed at about 70 lb each (Home Depot). Check the bundle label, and make sure your roof and vehicle can handle the load. On a full re-roof that weight adds up quickly, so if you haul bundles yourself, split the load into several trips.
Don’t forget starter strips and ridge caps
Starter shingles (along the eaves) and ridge cap shingles (along peaks and hips) are usually sold separately. Count them on top of your field shingles.
Measure the length of your eaves and rakes for starter strips, and the length of every ridge and hip for cap shingles, then check each product’s coverage per bundle. While you’re measuring eaves, it’s a good moment to price new gutters too: try the gutter installation cost calculator.
